WTF is Instagram?



Anyone heard of Instagram? It's the social media network taking the world by a storm.

Instagram is an online social media network which allows you to share images and videos as well as record temporary "stories" and live videos. It is also one of the most successful apps in the world. According to Instagram the social platform has more than 300 million daily active users and 500 million monthly users. To date, over 40 billion photos have been shared (which is over four times more than there is human beings on earth) and an average of 95 million photos and videos are shared every day.

Instagram was first released in 2010 and in 2012 Facebook decided they wanted to be a part of the app that was taking over the world. Since Facebook took over ownership, usage has been astronomical. The best part about this for us is that Instagram now integrates with Facebook so you can upload a photo or video to Instagram and then also share it to your Facebook profile and vice versa. Pretty cool huh?


Of course you can!

Instagram is one of the best social media networks for businesses to advertise on. Statistics show that 75% of Instagram users take action, such as visiting a website, after looking at an Instagram advertising post.

In saying that, depending on the target market you are trying to engage you have to look at whether Instagram will work for you and your business. Instagram is the perfect advertising canvas for females aged between 18 - 40 because most of them love it and regular and active users. Personally, I love it and every chance I get, you will find me checking my Instagram feed, or as I like to call it "my Insta".

Advertising on Instagram is similar to Facebook, there are a couple of different ways you can do it.

Photo Ads

A photo ad is just simply a single photo that you sponsor to allow it to reach more users. It will appear as a regular photo post with a Sponsored label above the photo. A Learn More button also appears on the bottom corner which you can link to whatever you like, usually your website.

Video Ads

Video ads are just a video post which you sponsor so they will show in the Instagram feed with a Sponsored label above the video.

Carousel Ads

Carousel ads allow you to include more than one photo in your post. This type of ad makes users fully engage with the ad to swipe sideways so they can view the multiple photos. The best part about Carousel Ads is it triggers interaction which means the users are getting the most out of the ad, plus they look awesome.


The hashtag - what the hell is that some might say. A hashtag is basically just a word or a phrase that precedes the hash sign. It is used to describe your image and also help your post be seen by not just your followers but people all over the world.

The best thing about the hashtag is once you assign your hashtag to a post, other users on Instagram can then search that hashtag and guess what you will feature in the search. Just remember to think carefully when creating a hashtag that you use the right one for you and your brand and make sure it is something general that people would think to search. You also don't have to restrict yourself to one hashtag, you can have up to 30 - but that's probably a bit excessive.

Hashtags aren't only specific to Instagram, you can use them on all social media networks but they work best on Instagram.

Now you probably wouldn't have heard of this one, but it's pretty cool too. One of the features Instagram has it allows you to add a location to photos when you post them. If you use this feature, the service will create a photo of your photos and this is what we call Geotagging.

The location is then showed above the photo on your post and people can click on the geotagged locations to view all of your posts in that area. For example, if you took a photo at your business hub and geotagged the post, Instagram users can easily see where your business is located without you even doing a thing.

You can also toggle your location on and off your post so it doesn't have to be on every post if you don't want it to be.


In my experience, we have used both Instagram and Facebook to post updates and images for a particular client on their business account. On every image that is posted on both platforms, Instagram will get triple the amount of likes.

When I checked the statistics book, Instagram supposably clocks up 3.5 billion likes every day. Why wouldn't you want to join?
