As we say hello to 2019, there is so much to look forward to in terms of design. We're excited!!
So what's happening in the world of design this year? Well there are lots of fun and overarching design trends that are all vying for attention. The journey we walk for the next 12 months is going to be a very interesting one. One that will allow us to embrace vibrant duotones with vintage palettes and the use of whimsical illustration as well as mid-century functionality. It's the year for contradictions.
It's going to be fun.
3D Design & Typography
Take a look around you, three dimensional work is already starting to be embraced by designers all over the world. It allows the designs to have so much depth and character that make you feel like you can reach out and touch them. The typography when done with a 3D visual effect adds the feeling that the text is popping off the page. It doesn't matter how you apply this trend - it just works. Whether you opt for a bold, skinny, sans-serif, script or any font in between, it looks fantastic.
It's not just typography that works with this design trend. Three dimensional design can also be applied to graphics and illustrations. Transform your design from being flat and boring and bring it to life - so much so that your viewers won't be able to look away.
Gone are the days when we stuck to the grid and enter the asymmetrical design trend. We are now able to be more creative with what we put in front of people. We are breaking the grid and predictability and swapping it for something that demands attention. We are telling a story with our design, while keeping the audience guessing "what next". It creates a feeling of wonder.
Art Deco inspired designs are set to blow us all away in 2019. This trend is going to become increasingly obvious in logo design where we embrace the complex line-work and intense symmetry of the 1920s artistic movement. Typography may also look to take a step towards the art deco style as we start to see our sans-serif fonts become narrower and leggier. This style creates an opulent and luxurious feeling which is something a lot different to the rustic, country-inspired design trends that have dominated for the past few years.
Ok now mix the art deco style with a mid-century inspired design and create something spectacular. Mid-century design has been a very prominent design trend in the interior design and fashion industries for the past few years but we are now seeing it make it's way into digital and graphic works. It's time to embrace the power of custom illustration work influenced by the post-war era while adding some modern style and retaining the vintage colour palettes.
Gradients & Duotones
Gradients have been a very popular design trend over the past couple of years and in 2019, they are here to stay. Gradients have become increasingly obvious in logo design because a simple one-colour logo is just not enough any more. By adding these gradient tones it creates interest, impact and enthusiasm to your logo design.
We have seen the expected gradient combinations of blue/purple and red/orange but what about some duotone fades? Duotones are two halftones applied onto photography to create a lovely colour effect. There is no better way to add impact and drama to a photo than with an extraordinary colour scheme.
Warm & Moody Colour Palettes
While we continue to embrace bold gradients and duotones, we also prepare ourselves to watch the rise in moody and vintage tones. It's definitely the year for contradictions - bold and neon on one hand and warm and wistful on the other hand. Our photography in 2019 will see us take on a similar style to that of the soft, low-fi images of the 1970s where staged stock photos are no longer cool. We are now looking for more natural photographs that make it look like we have captured the moment without anyone noticing.
In 2019, our illustration style is about to change from bold thick lines that we have seen so heavily used in design for the past few years to be more refined and simplified using a much thinner and delicate style. While the illustration style is changing, we are preparing to find these illustrations everywhere. There are not just used sporadically across different media - they everywhere you look.
So strapped yourselves in. 2019 is going to be a big year full of excitement where boundaries will be pushed and we will see many opposites. Get ready to be immersed in the mass production of 3D design, asymmetrical layouts, duotones, custom illustration and much more.
